Here’s what current Technical Analysts (from various disciplines) say about their role:

“As a TA, I think the aspects of the job that I like most are the variety of companies that we visit and also the enthusiasm that is expressed by some of the clients when you engage them about their work. Coming from a scientific, and mainly academic background, its great to go into a business and to be able to apply your knowledge in a different way! It's also really good to know that for the smaller clients, the work that we are doing will really be of significant benefit to the individuals we are meeting. So it’s really nice when they engage - because you really do feel that you are helping them find the best way through an obstacle course.”

“Learning about all the different industries our clients are in has to be one of my most enjoyable parts of the role. To be in such diverse companies, big and small, and being able to learn about their technology is a fascinating and interesting part of the role and one I'll never get complacent about. “

“The huge amount of variety in the job, particularly using skills I already have and combining them on a daily basis with new skills (liaising with different client types, learning financial information). A TA has to be adept at communicating with clients, extracting relevant information from technical meetings, putting together a comprehensive report, and then moving to work with the client to collate their costs (frequently the most involved part of the process).”

“Joining a company at a time when your opinion is valued, such as being able to improve in-house procedures, suggest new directions for the company. To be given responsibilities early on in the job was a real plus point for me, as it takes you out of your comfort zone and ultimately means you are always challenging yourself, which at my stage of my career is something I get very excited about!”

“Enjoy being challenged, especially by managing several clients at once. A TA needs to ensure they are very able at multi-tasking and can cope with pressure. This again adds variety to the role, and pressure (in a good way!) which drives you to do well. I'm always aware there is support in Jumpstart if I need it, particularly when we are working towards tight deadlines or if a client is unresponsive.”

“The job gives you an amazing opportunity to project and team manage.”

“I think for a person to get the most out of a TA role, they need to be open to a flexible working environment as well as willing to adapt to help other members of the team during busy periods. They should not expect a formulaic job pattern (i.e. a restricted role where everything is set in stone) and should enjoy taking on responsibilities as and when needed. They need to have a pro-active and outgoing personality to enable them to interact with clients easily, and deal with them if clients become difficult. Working day-to-day in the Jumpstart office, a TA needs to be able to work closely with a variety of people in different situations so therefore needs to be quite respectful and deal with grievances appropriately without impacting on others.”

“Although I'm only here a month, I feel like I have developed a lot since the day I walked in the door. One of the things that attracted me to this job was variety and I've had great exposure to new things. I've have already met with managing directors of all types of companies, getting to understand the work they do. My job is to talk to them about their projects, see the types of R&D they are doing, learn about their failures and successes and explain to them how their work can qualify for government support. After the meeting I produce a report of our conversation, and then it's on to the next client.

My background is in mechanical engineering but in Jumpstart I'm not pigeon-holed. This job depends on the transferrable skills I've built to date - verbal and written communication, a solid technical foundation and a hefty chunk of teamwork. Being part of a young, open-minded, highly intelligent and diverse team brings about some interesting conversations. I'm given the trust to do my job without someone looking over my shoulder, but with a team of people to help if I need them. If that sounds like the kind of place you'd like to work, Jumpstart is well worth considering! “

“Dynamic, varied, exciting, self-directing, fun!”
